Snails are more sensitive than most people think. One wouldn't last long, or thrive in an uncycled environment.

Also, how big is the tank? Lupin could give you some ideas as to species.

Get a heater and a sponge filter. You don't need any other filter. A sponge filter should be sufficient. The only snails I'd put with bettas are nerites or MTS. Bettas tend to harass snails especially when they expose their soft tissues.

They stay in sand (yes, you want sand if you get them) 95% of the time. Mostly used for stirring sand in planted tanks.

And if you get like 4, that will be 40 in a few weeks, and so on.

 

Overfeeding is often the cause for population boom. I'd throw a few adults every week just to control the population. They'll do fine in tanks with or without plants. They're basically undemanding.

Any color of mystery snail should work. Do note however "black" mystery snails do not exist. There is no solid black mystery snail. They're either dark striped green (wild form) or dark striped purple. Guppies will work fine but make the tank heavily planted if you want your shrimps to breed. Guppies can easily eat the shrimp larva.

i keep unwanted snailes in chipped wine glasses with avacado seeds in them at room temp goofy but better than the flusher i mean most FW snail breath air they just need to stay moist

 

I don't know as much as Lupin, but my experience with the golden mystery snail has been awesome. As far as I have read, they aren't asexual (althought some sites say otherwise, but I think I am right about this), so you don't have to worry about a lot of babies like you do with apple snails. The thing won't die. It survived two tank cycles and two parasites. It eats the left over food in the tank and when I feed peas to my fish, it cleans up what they don't eat. I have only had it for 3 months and have only owned my fish tank for that time, but I have learned the hard way about cycling tanks and parasites and so far, the snail is the heartiest thing I have put in my tank. Surprisingly the snail (lovingly named goldy by my kids) has quite the personality and is fun to watch. My kids want another one and there is no way because I am not willing to take the chance of having a tank full of snails (unless of course you are looking for that). All apple snails are sexual. Sites that call them otherwise are a bluff.

All you need is a small air pump to run the filter. This is the exact model I am using on my 20 gallon Turtle aquarium, which has about 8 gallons of water, a Turtle, 2 Large Danios, and a Dojo Loach.

The benefits of adding a filter are well worth the few dollars you will spend. Not only will you be able to do much more with this aquarium, you will have a a lot of versatility in future aquarium projects. ;-)

 

thanks everybody! The sponge filter was bought today, and the water is cycling! wait... do snails need cycled water? Also, are there any snails that will get along with Red Tailed Sharks? I really want ONE for my 10 gallon.

nope, I have a 7.5 gallon snail tank (just started cycling today) , and I want ONE snail to go in m 10 gallon community tank.

 

snails could live in a toilet bowl as long as it wasn't too acidic (shell erosion) or too cold most people have the oposite problem.. how to get rid of them lol unless your one of those fancy snail ppl in that case i should've kept my mouth shut lol
