I am asking for my neighbor who has a group of gold fish. They suddenly started losing their color and a couple are almost white. Any reasons that would cause this? I remember awhile back overhearing someone ask a LFS about it and they had no clue as to what was happening.

The first things that come to mind are stress or malnutrition. Can you ask what they're feeding them/how often etc.??

And can you get them to list their water parameters? Ammonia, Nitrite, nitrate, ph?

If these fish actually do not have any health issues, this is simply a natural occurrence called cell suicide or apoptosis if I recall right. What color were they originally? Black is the most unstable color. It will eventually fade away turning to orange, yellow, red or white.
