I have researched ways to add bettas to community aquariums with a breeding container to introduce the new fish then put it into the tank after a day or so. I want to get 3 phantom tetras but will they get stressed/sick if 3 are in there for too long??? What do i do??? :thanx for any advice!

It would probably be better if you introduced the tetras to the tank and then brought in the betta. That way you won’t be introducing fish into a tank that the betta already considers HIS. I've always kept bettas in community tanks and have never had a problem. My current betta will chase a fish occasionally but only for a few inches, he doesn’t like it when a fish gets too close to him, other than that he is fine.

I agree kaxt. Add the tetra first, but it will still depend on a betta's personality. Also, the tetra are schoaling fish, therefore need to be in a group of 5-6 but preferably more. What size tank is this?
I personally dont recommend tetras of any sorts with bettas. Tetra tend to be a bit too nippy for the delicate fins of a betta.
I successfully have my betta in a community tank, always have. Its about the betta's personality. For my guy, he is pretty docile and I was able to simply just add what I wanted to his tank...yep his tank...he was in the tank first. He enjoys his tankmates, and always has for the most part...he just didnt like the random rasbora in his half of the tank while eating a ghost shrimp.

I concur with Amanda. It is perfectly true that different Betta can have different "personalities" for lack of a better word, but a Betta is still a Betta and this fish species is "programmed" by selective breeding to be a fighter, and when you programme fighting instincts into animals, anything can happen. The safest course is to keep a male Betta in its own space, a 5g tank works fine.
And the tetra need larger groups; at least 6 but if you have space, even more. And with Black Phantom Tetra, get a mix of males and females (they are easy to sex, see the data in our profile, click on the shaded name). The natural displays of the males is beautiful to observe. Depending upon your tank size, I would suggest 4 male and 3 female or a larger group in a similar ratio.

I bought the tetras before reading this. It still worked. It is true that bettas have their own social preferences. I have a thread on bettafish.com under "compatibility" forum on how it worked. I think it worked because my betta usually is in the left corner of the tank and considers that to be his territory.
