Algae VS Cyano

How do I tell the difference? I've got a tank sitting directly in front of a window with broken blinds, no plants in it. Green stuff is starting to form on the glass. This was certainly expected and I'm not worried about algae but I dont want Cyano. I put my hand in and tried to smear it but there was no effect, it didn't even feel different then the glass. It's also on a decorative castle and a river rock and the back of my filter(think the filter is an HoB model but it's almost completly submerged and only the top is sticking out of the water)

If it comes off in a sheet, like slime, it is cyanobacteria. If you need to scrape it off, it is a type of algae.

I find cyano appears first in window tanks, but then cyano and all algae occur according to the biology in the tank, so each tank can be quite different.

Also, from my experience with cyanobacteria is that it has a bad odor to it, like an earthy, swamp-like smell that I've never experienced with algae. If I were to get in on my hands the smell would stay for a while no matter how much I scrubbed them.

It was pretty nasty and it covered everything - plants, rocks, gravel.

Treated it with erythromycin first, but had better results with Chemiclean, haven't had a problem with it since.
