How do I tell the difference? I've got a tank sitting directly in front of a window with broken blinds, no plants in it. Green stuff is starting to form on the glass. This was certainly expected and I'm not worried about algae but I dont want Cyano. I put my hand in and tried to smear it but there was no effect, it didn't even feel different then the glass. It's also on a decorative castle and a river rock and the back of my filter(think the filter is an HoB model but it's almost completly submerged and only the top is sticking out of the water)

I agree, I have a tank in a window and the only 'algae' I have is cyano.
It only covers the back glass though, so I leave it. Makes a nice background.

Also, from my experience with cyanobacteria is that it has a bad odor to it, like an earthy, swamp-like smell that I've never experienced with algae. If I were to get in on my hands the smell would stay for a while no matter how much I scrubbed them.
It was pretty nasty and it covered everything - plants, rocks, gravel.
Treated it with erythromycin first, but had better results with Chemiclean, haven't had a problem with it since.
