What species of puffer?

 

spotted like it says above (dwarf)

 

...they're all spotted I think...

...but Dwarf, Malabar and Pygmy are all synonyms...

Oto cats can go in with them if you have it planted heavily enough...

...shrimp can go in with them too...however if and when they discover that shrimp taste good...then it's goodbye to interspecies tank harmony... :lol:

 

i find mine attack everything thats moving even large snails i tried a small anistus catfish that i was given to me he was in with them for the less than a day before he lost parts of his tail(now in planted tank doing well) ghost shrimp also seem to be a favorite its like watching a sqadron of mini zepplins attacking a warship, im yet to try ottos as i cant find anywere that stocks them but i would make sure an alternate home is avalible for any companion species that are tried

 

update-porupine snails still alive and well after a week in with the puffers the puffers ignore them completely which they didnt do with larger red ramshorns??oh well

 

i have an oto in with my puffers and hes doin just fine, been in there for a while now, i had 3 in there but moved 2 to other tank as there wasnt enough algae for them

 

I'm thinking about getting puffers myself so I have been researching them. Two fish keep cropping up when it talks of tankmates: ottos and bumblebee gobies. There is one type of bumblebee goby that can live in freshwater and one that needs brackish so you'd have to make you got the right one. You'd also need an alternative home available I would say as puffers are pretty unpredictable but the problem here is that bumblebee gobies are often not good in community tanks either, so they might need to be kept in a species tank as well if they didn't work out with the puffers.

 

I think the topic of whether puffers can be with other fish will never be agreed. My two green spotted get along with my Mono's and my archers, but i have read that personality and age can be a factor, it said when they get older they can suddenly change from being ok with other tankmates to ripping apart everything that they can find, but again they can just stay being friendly. Ive had no trouble with fin nipping, ive even had mono's and puffers eating a mussle face to face without any trouble. so maybe is just luck, it seems there are good and bad stories for both sides of the debate.
