how big is this tank? how big is the goldfish? what kind of goldfish?

granted your tank is big enough and (goldies need a big one) you may be able to put a school of white clouds.

Dojos like cooler water so they may be a good choice, yes?

Lol.. a foot long is a bit oversized. It's only a 5.5 so I was thinking small. Initially I was just going to have the one goldfish but it looks rather silly. I suppose it'd probably be best to just stick with some other goldfish then.

And as I said above it's a fantail goldfish. It's only about an inch and a half. I'm thinking of eventually adding 2 maybe 3 more.

 

Uh oh....5.5 is very small, especially for a goldfish. They are very messy fish with huge bioloads. I have no idea how large a fantail gets? I'm not sure if it's wise to add another fish to this tank... :-(

For this size tank you'd be better off getting a betta. A 5.5 for a betta is a great home, and you could also add some pygmy cories or some otos or ??

that tank will not be much good for long,goldfish of any species need a large tank,
as they do produce a lot of waste,i wanted some,however i can't occomadate them,
to live to their full potential.
a tank that size would be nice for a Betta,or shrimps,planted with wood decore.

 

I had a different one for over a year in another tank and it never exceeded 3 inches. Reading up on them it generally says their max size is 6 inches. I'd be willing to increase the tank size if they grow. I was just assuming from my experience it takes them forever to grow?

 

Your fantail more likely stayed small because it growth was stunted by the small size of the tank. Stunted growth creates a lot of health problems on fishes, and also dramatically shortens their lifespan. Keep in mind, most goldfishes can like up to 10 years if not more!

 

I just tried googling for growth rates on fantails and found nothing of interest other than that they require 30gl of water per fish...:shock:

 

Nope, they can get over a foot long, and they produce alot of waiste, no less than a 15g. The reason the goldfish didn't grow was cuz it was in a small tank and it couldn't grow properly, the insides grow and the outsides cant. TRUST ME! they can live up to 20 years and grow HUGE if they ave the right care Please either rehome your fish, or get a bigger tank!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE LISTEN!!!!

I have a fantail goldfish. He is in a 36gal. It took him less than a year to grow to 6inches. That does not include his tail, you could add on another 2inches for that. If they have room to grow, they will.

 

and goldfish that DONT have the room to grow end up having internal problems.

I got that from the first person said that o.o But thank you onefish2fish. As I said I'm keeping him alone and I'm willing to get a bigger tank when he needs it

 

U prly won't be able to tell cuz he wont grow to well in a 5.5, I reccomend in a few months getting the biggest tank ou can, and if its 30g or bigger you can put in more goldies! If you want to you could add some white cloud minnows to ur 5.5g once you move out the goldfish!
