Fish with bloody tail?

I recently caught a fish from the river (with a small net) and we decided to try and keep him.
However, we noticed he has a bloody tail and thus cannot swim well, which wasn't the case when we got home with him?

I read that this is a cause to stress, but am not sure what else it could be, and if we can do anything to help?

Thanks in advance!

I don't know the answer but I don't think you should take fish from the wild.
