I've had both and the only difference I've seen is appearance. Maybe someone else with more experience will chime in. They both did well for me under low light.

when getting xmas moss always ask for pics and get someome who owns the true xmas moss to id it for you. peacock moss often gets sold as xmas moss. I like xmas moss, It's nice and fluffy :3 java tends to be leggier
