I ordered two rice fish (Oryzias woworae) and they each have white spots that are not ich. The spots look a bit too large for ich,(although still small of course) for one thing. For another thing, there are only two spots on each fish. I have not run across this before. The spots are almost silver-ish. The fish are active and otherwise healthy. I have raised the temp to 30C and will keep it there two weeks in case it is in fact ich. They've had the spots for a week, (since a few days after I got the fish) and they have not increased. I can't add salt to the tank as it contains a GBR. Anyone have any ideas?

It would help if you had a photo, but my guess is either natural markings, cysts/tumors, or a fungal infection about to start. Sometimes fungal infections will start out as small white spots, then bumps, then fuzz.

Well, it's hard enough to see the white spots with the fish being so active, let alone take a picture. Yeah, they're more like bumps than spots, really. I have Prazipro. Will this help? And can my GBR tolerate it?

I don't know. My knowledge on meds is limited, we have very few options here. With that last description they're likely cysts or fungus about to start. More likely cysts by the sounds of them. What you want is a light antibacterial everyone can handle, once they pop they will drain...and you just need something to clear up a light infection so they dry up and go away. Salt is really good for that, but not if your rams wont tolerate it.

Ask in the meds section about what antibacterials are safe for all of them, someone else can probably tell you. =)

You could always just try keeping the water clean, that's really the best medicine. Cysts are annoying, but will often pop, dry up and go away on their own if they are kept in a clean, peaceful environment.

I think I'll just do some extra water changes, since the cysts, if that's what they are, are not showing up right now. Maybe they already popped. I'm scared to death to try any meds because of how sensitive rams are. If the cysts show up again, I'll have to check on meds that are safe for rams. Thank you!
