I am looking for certain fish that my local seller does not carry, I was wondering if anyone on the this board can point me in the direction of a good online fish seller? I prefer one that more then a few transactions have been made and have a good track record of not only being known for positive transactions but selling healthy fish. Thanks for any help that can be given.

This place has a great reputation. I haven't purchased from them myself so have no personal experiences with them.

Aquarium Fish: Tropical Freshwater Fish and Saltwater Fish for Home Aquariums

Do you have any local Aquarium clubs? You might want to Google search in your area to see if you do. Will save you a ton on shipping which tends to be more than the actual fish that you purchase.

Good luck!

What fish are you looking for?

1- There is the Potomac Valley Aquarium Society, I would suggested going to one of their meetings or another groups meetings if there is one closer. The groups are usually Cichlid heavy.

2- Batfish Aquatics | Home Page, The owner of this site travels to different clubs in the mid Atlantic coast. Nice availabilty but I have not personally purchased fish from him. The fish he brought to a recent auction were of good quality. He is in the DC area so you may be able to pick the fish up.

3- The wet spot tropical fish store out of Portland OR. Excellent store/shipping.

4- Aquabid, read reviews of sellers and with any of the mail order fish, I would suggest waiting till it warms up and pay the extra money for over night shipping. I have purchased most of my fish from this site and it seems that people with great reviews will bend over backwards to make you happy.

5- That Fish place near Exton PA has shipped me a fish a couple times with mixed success. I put them on here because they shipped me some of the nicest looking catfish. Your so close that I would just drive to them if you can.

I also like Frank's aquarium in NY.He gets the weird oddballs sometimes. He has a list of fish coming in not listed on the site. He may possibly not be shipping until the weather is right. He is very particular about his fish, and treats them all before they leave. Good guy..

If you are looking for a Cichlid, your best bet is to find a local aquarium club. Any fish raised by someone local is already acclimated to your water and generally does better without the long shipping. Also, they tend to be VERY cheap. Sometimes they have non-cichlids, but generally, they sell what they raise, and cichlids are easier to raise.

A good LFS can order you something different. You pay a little more, but the better stores take on the onus of providing you with quality stock, as well as a local face to deal with if a problem occurs. However, be careful of the store that does no more than merely place the order on aquabid for you and charge a markup.

Going alone on the internet, you can find the most oddball of stock. Aquabid is the eBay of live fish... but eBay dabbles too. These provide some level of protection for the purchaser, and provides a little bit of regulation and oversight. People with a lot of positive reviews in a very short time may be plants, but sellers with YEARS of positive reviews are likely on the up and up.

There are also a few private websites of breeders of specific fishes. However, it really is the land of buyer-be-wary.

Thanks Thoth, I am still looking into Potomac Valley & The Fish Place, Batfish Aquartics just happen to be less then five minutes away :-D and they only show by appointment. My appointment is at 2pm today looking forward to it, hopefully I will come home with a pleco. I will update the forum after my visit today.

The Wet Spot looks good I like their prices if things dont work out with Batfish my next option is Wet Spot. Aquabid looks promising will keep an eye on them.

Thoth,
I went by Batfish Aquartics was ok with everything but really didn't like the way the tanks were kept. Especially the Pelco tanks, I am not a breeder so I do not know the requirements or how most breeders keep tanks but the Pelco tanks I was shown were filthy.

I had my eye on either a Lemon Drop or a Butterfly Pelco one of these two. When I was shown the Lemon Drop tank, there was a dead Pleco in the tank. I told the gentleman I am not interested in anything out of that tank! When I was shown the Butterfly Pelco tank the one that I saw dorso fin and tail looked to be nibbled. So I declined.

I was shown the Spotted Orange Seam Plecos (L-106), first thing I noticed was too many of them in the small tank (again Im not a breeder so I am looking thru the eyes of a hobbiest) and they looked dull (color wise). So I chose what I thought was the best one and smallest one. Even tho I didn't like the way the shop was kept, I am thinking of going back and getting another Spotted, depending on Frank (Yes, I named him/her? Frank :))

I feel real bad for him/her being he/she came for a crowded tank to a 75 gallon wide and have the tank all to him/her self. Frank is skittish (hope this is temp) and I am keeping a close eye on my water and Frank to make sure all stays well. I introduced so zucchini which Frank has not touched yet but I am going to give it a couple days while I do a little more research on the Spotted Orange Seam. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.

I know that Batfish breeds some fish but I have been under the impression most of his fish are imported. Fish can be severely damaged in shipping. I have received fish with significant fin damaged that survive a the fins grow back good as new in a couple months. This may be what you were seeing. Plus, If the tanks had algae, I dont think that is a big deal but a build up of fish waste would be bad. Not trying to sound like I am defending the shop, I have never seen the facility. I have only seen what has been brought to fish auctions, which I am sure is the prime picks of the inventory. I hope that the fish work out for you. . Check out planetcatfish for some info on the Lnumbered fish. Good reference site that see posting by well respected catfish people across the globe (at least on the Cory section that is, I dont keep or have the room for plecos) Ill keep it short, I burned my right hand cooking dinner

Thanks again Thoth, sorry I'm answering late (Hope your right hand is better) I am thinking of getting Frank a playmate he seems only being in that big tank by him/herself. I will be populating my tank now since it has maintain stability and is ready for some fish.
