I have a newly stocked 55 gallon tank - about 3 days now. it has a beta, 2 angels and a plecostomus in it. I have been reading since i got the fish that angels can be tricky to keep, and can be easily killed off by sudden temperature changes. I have the tank set at about 79 deg. F , my question is what is the best way to change water without dropping the temp too much. the room temp is normaly around 75 in summer 65 at the lowest in the winter (i dont run the heat much) should I boil a pot of water and mix with the room temp water to bring it close to 79? or does it really mater? and also how much water should i change out at a time?

Water boils at 212 degrees - it would be much easier just to run the hot water with some cold mixed in, to get the temp close. It does not have to be exact. A big temperature swing can be bad, but a few degrees will go unnoticed. It's not as easy to kill your fish as people make it out to be. You have to really screw something up big time in order to shock them to death, which is what and huge shift in a parameter will do, whether it's temp or pH.

I change 80% when I do a water change. Many people do less - in the 30-50% range. Some people only do 20-25%. There is no magic number, but if there were it wouldn't be anywhere near 9%, which is 5 gallons.

Since your tank is new and has not completed the cycle yet, you will have to do a lot of water changes for the next month. I would not add any more fish until the tank has cycled because it will just make it that more difficult to maintain water quality.
