Oh well sense no one else is helpin with your question i guess i will. First off it sounds like you dont. I will be having over 600 gph in my 20 gallon. And what are you using to generate that flow? You know powerheads arent the thing anymore, the new 'streams' are what you want for coral flow. These use barely any electricity and create huge, evenly spread out flows, you can point them directly at coral. You also want to consider what kind of flow you have. is it coming from a single source or do you have multiple powerheads pointed at each other? You want chaotic flows. this is obtained by having multiple sources of water flow pointed at each other. this can be obtained with powerheads, i only mentioned streams because they use less electricity for more flow.
here are some of the streams i told you about(incase you are unfamiliar with them)

You need about 10x your tank capacity.

No not wave makers. Its this whole new type of pump, the 'propelers' are even designed differently, the idea is to create a evenly diribubted flow. Crm is gunna have to evplain it better.
Or you can go to tunzes website and they can tell you y these pumps are so great.

you need the filter to pump out minimum 6 times the whole tank capacity an hour. you also need to MOVE 20-30 times the tank capacity per hour aswell. if u have a 100 litre tank, u need to filter(6 times) 600 litres and hour and move say (25 times)2500 litres n hour around the whole tank.thats what the lfs guy told me and i have crystal clear water

Ok well lets say you meet the 20X you say how many pumps should you have to meet that. 1, 2, 3, 4 you don't want dead spots in the tank I am building a 125 gal 72inch long tank easy to have dead spots with one 2600 gph powerhead.

Also is it better to cycle the water in the tank more then 6X her hour to go throw the sump/refugium? and why or why not?

Thanks Roger

to not create dead spots try to have minimal surface area touching the sand where i mean if u have a triangle piece or somthing u put it on the angle instead of the flat piece so water flows over it. 1 power head really isnt enough u need atleast 2 bare minimum to move the water from all spaces high n low
