so my venustus is holding eggs and i didnt want her to get bullied and lose the eggs so i went out to petsmart and bought the top fin breeder net so i can put her in there. now as shes in there im wondering if the breeder net is too small for her. i mean she can turn around pretty easily in it. let me know what you guys think.

do you want my honest opinion..and that's all it is...but....i think
it looks pretty grim :-( she looks very exposed in there,no privacy, and
no where to hide, what tank decor do you have ?
i hope not to have offended you .

She is in no need of being confined like that. They are notoriously great parents and she should be ok as long as your tank is properly sized and set up.
Is the dad in there too? He should protect her normally and help keep the fry safe once she is ready to spit them out. If you're trying to sell the fry or something maybe you need to set up another tank for her that will eventually be the fry tank.

What is your current setup? and how long has she been holding?

the dad is in there too but he is a peacock cichlid and he chased her around. she was holding eggs last month but i think she swallowed them. i just dont want her to be bullied to where she gets stressed and loses the eggs.

oh those are super hybridized eggs then. BTW she probably spit them out when they were ready to swim and they were eaten. I doubt she is stressed. Honestly though you should let her loose the fry.. They are far too hybrid to sell. Are you trying to just keep them in your tank...please don't give away sell or allow those fry to go anywhere other then your tank or cull them.

whfew! lol Sorry was hoping that or culling would be your answer. OK then be prepared for LOTSA babies.

You should put her in a holding tank with a sponge filter fully cycled. Do you know when the two bred?
Well anyway.. I think it'll be a bit near impossible to care for the fry in the breeding net.. the others in the tank will harass them pretty bad...not to mention she likely is carrying a clutch of 25-50 eggs.
You can leave her with the fry once they are free swimming and feed her with them for a few day before putting her back in the main tank.

I guess you could get away with 20 gallons. well actually how big is she right now because they get pretty huge.
40gbreeder would be better as they will need to grow big enough to be safe in your tank. and being such a cross breed there is no tlling how long that'll take. Haps grow very slow while peacocks grow faster but not as fast as your two mbunas you have. Make sure if you give some to your friend they are aware these fish shouldn't be bred, sold, given away or in anyway seeped into the world of cichlids.

lol. Halloween? How appropriate .

But to be really honest.. 55 gallons isn't a really ideal for more then one venustus.

are you sure she is holding? Thats awfully small for a hap especially a venustus to be holding. They generally don't sexually mature till about 12months and these are on average 10inch fish when grown.
Can you get a good picture of her mouth? Has she been refusing to eat?

Is the 55 your main tank? the one she is from and where she got naughty Halloween night ;-) . If so it depends on the current stock if they will not be to angry by losing space. The problem mainly I'd see with that is how long will it take these 25-50 fry to get of size? IDK how to help .. think I'm stalled out of ideas. Maybe a DIY breeder net that is much bigger? I really don't see any good ones online.
You can look on craigslist for a 10 or 20g and that would be a much better option. Sponge filters are cheap..

Much better! She should be much more comfortable in there! You should take a marker and write the spawn date on the tank.so you can be on the lookout within about 14-21 days after that date.
And oopsies, I think I may be wrong on theclutch size she can hold. Can be up to 120:shock:. But at her small size I do't think it's that high but still will be a lot.

Great! and don't rush her out of there after her fry are free swimming. Feed her for a bit so she can regain strength to not get bullied in the main tank. Poor girl has to pretty much fast this whole time with a mouth full of babies.
