Strange. How does one have 0 posts, when they already made 1 post.

Anyways, if the chip/crack is on the outside of the tank and it is not a big tank, it should be safe. Just do not stress the tank, but moving it, otherwise, you could cause the glass to weaken and the crack to spread out even more.

How big is the tank?

I would say get a new tank, any chips ding's, etc. Can weaken the tank. I would not trust a tank that has that has damage to the glass. As it could get weaker over time. and then one day shatter all over the floor. No matter how big it was. Think about it has your car window, you get a chip or crack in it. As the temp out side flucuates the damage gets more and more till you have to replace it. Your house does the same the temp never stays the same. And eventually the temp will take a toll on the damaged part.

Depending on where the chip is and how big the tank, it may or may not be safe. I have lots of chips on the corners of my 20 gallon tank, which occurred from tilting the tank on a surface when I was cleaning the tank. The tank is ugly looking on the outside, but has supported water for over 5 years. If the chip/crack is on the middle of the glass, then it would be more dangerous, since the pressure from the water could cause the glass to bow further, therefore, stressing the chip/crack even more. Moving the tank, which would cause the water to move around, would also increase the pressure on the glass. Water pressure on a larger tank is greater, therefore, it is more dangerous on larger tanks, compared to smaller ones. Plus if a small tank were to break, it is easy to house fish in bowls, pans, etc. Compared to a large tank breaking, which I'm sure you would keep larger fish and would have a harder time housing the fish.

Maybe provide info on the tank size and a pic of the chip/crack?
