A few months ago, I bought a 1 gallon tank, and yesterday I went to petco and chose a tiny female who was on the back of the shelf, and on the bottom of a stack of cups. She has been breathing at the top a bit, which has me a little worried, but she seems fine otherwise. I also found a 2 gallon tank w filter and light for $7, and I picked out a stunning male betta for it.

Very nice. Bettas breathe oxygen from the top. I wouldn't worry to much about that.

I wouldn't keep them together.
