Hi,
Can someone tell me what type of tetra would be ok in a tank with guppies? i'm looking to start a 30g or 40g aquarium that will have live plants, and sand.

Most kinds of tetra will do well with guppies-
I would avoid larger, more aggressive tetra because they will nip at your guppy's tails

but tetra that are the same size as guppies will definitely get along--
neon tetra, cardinal tetra, rummynose tetra, glowlight tetra, silver tip tetra, black neon tetra, gold neon tetra, x-ray tetra, and black skirt tetra.

I would avoid red minor serpae tetra as they can be a bit nippy.

Rasbora can also be really good guppy pals!

also avoid the bueno aires tetra. they are very aggressive for tetras mine are always fighting. they also love to eat plants.

Ok thank you guys. I did do some research on tetra and have a list of tetra I will go through and pick from to go with the guppies.

Another Tetra not to get would be a Bleeding Heart Tetra, they get too large.

Otter gave great suggestions, a Lemon Tetra might be another one to consider.

The Cardinal Tetra, although especially beautiful, are a little more difficult to keep than the others due to their PH requirement.

Here is the list of tetra that I have:

Black Neon Tetra -peaceful, need at least 6. Grows to 1.5" omnivorous. eats flakes and frozen food.

Black widow/skirt Tetra- peaceful, need at least 6. Grows to 2.25"-3" omnivorous. eats flakes and frozen food.

Blind Cave Tetra- very peaceful, need a small group. Grows to 3.5" omnivorous. eats flakes and frozen food.

Blood fin Tetra- general Peaceful, need more than 6. Grows to 2.2" eats flakes and frozen food.

Flame Tetra- peaceful, omnivorous. eats flakes and frozen food. Grows to 1.5". Needs at least 6.

Head/tail tetra- peaceful, needs at least 6. Grows up to 2". eats flakes and frozen food.

Penguin Tetra- peaceful, needs at least 6. Eats frozen daphnia and bloodworms or live foods. Grows between 2.4"-3".

X-ray Tetra- very peaceful, omnivorous. eats flakes and frozen food. Grows to 1.75".
