I have a 10 gallon tank that I want to use either for a weird and wacky fish tank or a biotope. I want an aquarium project that needs work and is something special. I've been thinking of maybe a theme tank like all albino or species only or something like a single larger fish or a fish that's weird and random. Something that no one else has.

In a small tank, why don't you do a shrimp only tank. There are some nice shrimp varieties.

I'm sure several members will have suggestions, but it will help us to know the water parameters. When you get into biotope tanks the fish will most likely be wild caught and have specific preferences.

The GH (general hardness), KH (carbonate hardness or Alkalinity) and pH, all of which you can get from the municipal water supply people, likely on their website.

How about an assorted leach tank? I can guarantee that nobody likely keeps those.

There are some interesting freshwater leach species too. Grey, striped, black and even red. Some like current some don't. Lots of variety. Feeding them may be interesting though.

I used to have pet slugs, but I totally 100% draw the line at leaches. I don't even want to think about how you would feed them. *brrr*

pH is 6-6.5 or lower usually. GH and KH idk but I know it's on the lower side.

As for the leeches..... I know a place where I could find some wild caught ones in with the blackworms sometimes but........ they are my biggest animal phobia next to ticks. So that's a no.

With a pH that low the GH is likely under 5dGH.

A fish that my LFS is bringing in for me is the red Lizard whiptail catfish. The minimum tank suggestion is 10 gallons and their range is fairly wide. Sort of a cool looking fish but apparently they can be pricey for freshwater fish at $15 a pop. Maybe two or three of them if no other fish.

With soft acidic water, you have a lot of options for biotopes from South America or SE Asia, with small fish, branches/sticks, sand, floating plants.

With that low of a pH and likely a low GH you could look into the nanofishes. This would be things like Boraras and tiny loaches. Shrimp would also do well in a tank like that. You could do red cherry shrimp to begin with and add a second species that is more colorful and more expensive once you have the basics down.

Both of those tanks would be hard work. Shrimps and nanofish are very sensitive to water parameters. Live plants are basically a must with them.
