How much fert are you dosing? Sounds like way too much.

what size tank? i think you'd do better with flourish comprehensive than excel, has more nutrients.

How much light intensity do you have, for sure, comprehensive would be better, excel is just a liquid carbon, used by the plants when co2 is not available. Hopefully you have enough light to sustain the other additives. How long were those vals in your tank? I am not a val expert at all, but in my amateure experience found that they need some time to adjust. Do you see new growth? How does it look?

Also some say excel is detrimental to vals, to each their own tank and experiences.

noticed some green algae today when i got home so i set my programmable timer down to 9 hours from 10 hours.
Also i noted it seems that there are small brown circles of algae/mold??

Vals have started to produce new laves so i guess there ok and they started a whole new plant! The Vals, Wendtii and java moss are about 2 1/2 weeks old and the Anacharis bunches are just a week in the tank

Green algae is green spot or slimy? I have seen brown circles of algae in my tanks before, I have decided they were brown algae, if we are talking about the same thing, it wipes off easily? I have also seen brown string-like algae on the plant leaves of my newly setup tanks, or attaching to the glass in tiny strings, but they usually go away with time and water changes. It looks different then the brown algae that blankets the leaves. Just what I saw in my tanks, if it helps, and I found out that if you overdose with sulfur based water conditioners, like Prime, which I did, this can contribute to brown algae.

I like your tank btw, always liked those 54g corners, and like the way you scaped it with the rocks, should look really nice as a contrast to the wendtii.

Hello eaking:

While looking at the picture of your aquarium I noticed it is a quarter of a circle and iam curious do you notice that the curve of the glass magnifies the view for you. I have a quarter circle tank and I am amazed how light refracts through the tank and how large and colorful the livestock appear. I don’t have my tank in the corner; it sits with the backpoint against the wall making a giant backwards V so ambient light refracts threw both sides making a rainbow of colors.

angelcraze, they are just green spots, and the brown is def. algae. I am going to the LFS to pick up a Gold Nugget Pleco tomorrow. I'm sure it will be more then happy to help me out...

Pop, It is the only tank that I have so I dont have anything to compare it to but I do really like the look that it has. only one of the sides is completely covered the other hang past the other wall which is really cool because when i sit on my couch I have two total different views. Although it sometimes gets me because I end up thinking i have some how gotten more fish in the tank while i was at work. LOL

How much fert are you dosing? Sounds like way too much.

I have pulled back on the Excel and everything seems to be calming down

I pick up a Gold Nugget Pleco this morning while talking to my "friend" a light bulb popped on... The part of my tank that seem to be getting algae hangs a little past the wall and usually has natural light on hence the green algae is only on that spot...

Totally, I got green thread algae in the spring where the sun hit my tank in the morning, but went away when the sun didn't shine in for such a prolonged time.

Really simplified, Excel is just liquid carbon. It contains no micro or macro nutrients. You've already seen this, but vals are very sensitive to Excel. Overdosing it will melt them. I've also heard the same thing about anacharis, so cutting back was a good idea. You don't seem to be dosing micros at all, other than iron plus the root tabs.
