Depends.
What do you mean by a regular filter? Hang on back? Internal?
And it also depends on the size of the tank and what kind of live stock you have. Sponge filters are good for smaller tanks. And they are excellent if you have smaller livestock, like fry or shrimp. Sponge filters are also good for fish that don't like a lot of water movement like bettas or gouramis.
Hang on backs move more water. Which is good for bigger tanks. I also like that you can customize HOBs.
For my main tanks, I use a hang on back and a sponge filter. My quarantine tank has just a sponge filter.
