i am going to be starting a south american cichlid tank soo , i will only have south american cichlids and no central as i am going to set up a separate tank for them . i will also have some catfish from south america to accompany them , could someone please give me a list of a load of south american cichlids and catfish so i can get an idea of some of the fish i can have .

dont worry about tank size as i am going to sort that out when i no how many fish i am going to have.

Blue rams, Bolvian rams, bristlenose plecos, Apistogramma ,corydoras (becareful to have these guys in with breeding apistogramma) Angelfish, ottocinclus, Discus, Pitbull pleco, Clown pleco and im sure theres plenty more good luck with your tank. :D

Oscars are probally the most popular south american cichlid. Peacock bass are also popular, festae are beautiful, numerous species of pike cichlid (crenicichla), numerous species of geophagus, satanoperca and gymophagus, the heros family (severum is a common in this family), as well as uarus.

as for cats. the shovelnose family, pictus cats, numerous plecos.

pass peacock bass...they get way to big. some can get up to 3.5 feet.

are you looking for peaceful or aggressive?
there are oscars and severums(which could all under both), firemouths, africans, and what not, thier aggressive, convicts
or discus, angelfish, dwarf cichlids which are more peaceful

For the beginner, I'd recommend Salvinii, Port cichlids, Keyhole cichlids, Geo. balzanii, Geo. braziliensis, Geo. juripari. The geophagus family will sift gravel, but those mentioned should not uproot plants. They are kind of neat, too.

yes P-bass do get big but the Q was to give a list of SP. from south america whitch i did :wink:

if you like aggresive fish you should check out the jaguar. they have a wonderful blueish purple hugh to them and they have teeth to shred feeders with.

a good one to try is keyholes they are probably the most laid back of all the south americans

you have some very nice looking gold severums Kateyoup. I have 1 about 5 in. male and 1 juv. female about 2 in. hoping to have rotkiels soon as a club members fry grow some.
