I've recently been getting ready to set up an aquarium, all seemed like it would go smoothly until I learnt about water hardness and discovered that the water for my area is quite soft. Any ideas about what soft water fish to keep in a 22 gallon tank?
I guess it depends on how soft... I'm just starting out too but from my research, betta fish, rasboras, bristlenose pleco, panda and albino corydoras, kuhli loaches, and I think neon and cardinal tetras as well can all do well water that is both soft and acidic, from 2-4dgh and pH of 6-6.5. Some of them are schooling fish and have different behavioural needs/levels of hardiness but could check them out and see which ones you like?
Also you can add calcium loaded things like certain substrates/types of ornamental rock that can add to the hardness of the water but you'd probably have to always keep an eye on it with water changes... Easier to find something to match your water as you say.
