I'm pretty sure they are illegal in this area thanks to that big outbreak of em a few years back thanks to people dumping them in ponds when they got too big. Maybe not in your area. I hear they require a ton of food.
Yeah, I really wanted a snakehead but because they're illegal will have to settle for a couple of ornate bichers... unless I find something more interesting. Anybody have any suggestions?
Thread moved to Ancient Fish section as snakeheads are not cichlids.
Herna, welcome aboard. Where are you located? Most areas in US have banned the sale and entry of snakeheads. You might want to look into this thread. http://www.fishforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=2916
Entry of fish in areas where it is considered illegal results into imprisonment, heavy fines and confiscating and destroying of the said fish depending on the laws.
You will want to avoid that kind of snakehead. They grow far too big for an average aquarium.:shake: You have to realize how much assets you're going to used up for a snakehead..let alone a big tank of about 300 gallons.
A fish eating machine. Many areas have banned them as they are destroying native game fish. Check your local game laws via your local state and wildlife enforcement agency.
Yeah they are known to entirely wipe out ALL native fish in locations in which they do not have natural predators. They do it in a very short amount of time as well. I've heard of them getting into small lakes and killing off ALL native lifeforms in a matter of weeks or months.
Snakeheads can adapt quite well to various weather conditions unfortunately. If they didn't, wiping out of native population won't be possible. Such fish can actually travel between water channels just by simply limping/crawling(Who cares about legs? ) across the land until they find another body of water. Amazing survival.:shock2:
Yes indeed...gotta give em credit for being able to just climb out of a pond when theres nothing left to eat in one and just crawl on into another. I recall hearing some stories about them managing to catch some small animals (small dogs, cats, rabbits) on land for food as well when the whole big outbreak thing was going on.
there a great fish if you like something that just sits and eats i had a friend he had one for years i don't think i ever saw it move exept to eat there not banned in the uk even thogh they can survive in the westcountry(devon, cornwall) overwinter oh and as for food they will eat EVERYTHING and in endless amounts
isnt it good living in the uk??
we can have all these fish which are either banned elsewhere (take my clarias for instance)
