Hey guys,
I have a 27G hexagon so its a very tall tank and about 20 inches wide as well and based on what I read snails will like this type of tank.. Now my tank is all planted, I have only 2 fake plants left for some color and the rest of my plants are a giant amazon sword a big anubius. 2 smaller wisteria and 2 small java ferns, and 4 of some bamboo looking plant with pink/purple leaves.. It isn't bamboo but its stem looks like it.. Oh and I have 2 marimo moss balls..
Now I have never really had an algae problem in my tank, brown algae will grow on the tank walls if I don't clean it, but usually the walls get cloudy before that happens the driftwood I have in tank tho has a little green algae on it.. I just upped my lighting from 0.5 watts per gallon, to 1.0 watts per gallon so im sure algae will probably grow faster and I tend to have the lights on for like 15 hours.
Anway, the only local fish store in my area which I have been shopping at for 20 years now has ALL kinds of snails.. They have Nerites I think they are called ones with black and yellow strips on em.. They have assassin snails, and mystery snails, and I think maybe 1 other species.. Now I love the way the assassin snails look and I understand they are snail killers... But I had to get 3 of them.. I want more tho.. I decided to get 1 mystery or I guess its called apple snail.. Its a Yellow one and quite large compared to the assasins so from what I read they will probably ignore it unless they gang up on him..
Im thinking of getting 1 or two of those nerite snails too.. What do you guys think ? Or will my assassin snails kill them all ? I have seen the Mystery snail ride right overtop of my assassin snails and when he does or he gets close to touch they tend to come out and look for him but they haven't ever caught him and like I said hes just so big compared to them. The assassin look cool but I hate how they always hide..
Oh and I should add I have city water in Virginia, and its very hard water tends to build up calcium or some kind of deposits on the shower heads and so forth, and the PH in the water is 7.6-7.8.. I use driftwood in my tank tho and the PH tends to be more in the 6.8 range.. Is this too low of a PH or it ok since the water is hard ?
