I set up a mini tank exclusively for shrimp & snails with several pieces of store bought mangrove driftwood.

The driftwood have previously been boiled for several hours prior to being used in the tank.

A partial water change tonight & the water reeks of that decaying wood, mangrove/swamp smell.

Is this a concern to the livelihood of the shrimp?

I'm going through something similar. I don't think it's harmful (decay could alter water chemistry however). I'm going to switch mine out for fake as it's feeding a huge colony of blue-green algae. Let me know what you end up finding out. I'm sure someone's figured it out.

Yeah I'm thinking of fully switching the mangrove driftwood for more of an inland variety of wood that's available in fish shops.

Until I can do that, I'll do partial daily water changes.

I forgot how expensive this hobby can get!
