The guy at the shop told me that a school of Giant Danios will swim in unison and change direction at the same time spontaniuosly as they swim at high speed. Is this true??

In captivity, I doubt it because the space is mostly small for them to do that however a very long tank will allow them to do so. In the wild, of course they do that mainly to evade any predators.

I was hoping that being the only long term species in my 4 foot tank they might have enough room? Do you think its possible?

I don't think so.:shake: However, an 8 feet length tank would possibly do so. They will swim in shoals but not change direction spontaneously like they do in the wild. Without the presence of predators, this is rarely achieved in captivity.
I'd rather we leave that matter about directions in the wild than to try it in captivity with a large predator.

The giant danios are a "busy" fish, always moving, always chasing, but in small groups, that is all they tend to do... chase each other. They may sometimes change direction in unison if their group is large enough, but as Blue has pointed out, this is a wild behavior to protect them from predators, and not something we could easily recreate in a captive environment.
