Hi all,
I am thinking of setting up a 75G planted tank. I'll only keep a betta in it to let him spend his last few months in it. I was wondering if I need to do any water changes. Is it OK to just top off the tank every week or so to make up for evaporation losses?

Thanks,
Ami

At first, yes, they will be necessary to remove dead plant matter as the tank cycles. You'll still have to feed the plants since one Betta isn't enough to contribute to all the plants. Will you be doing a soil based tank or just regular sand/gravel?

water changes remove concentrated contaminates.... topping off with tap water concentrates minerals because minerals do not evaporate with the water... top offs should be with distilled or r/o water to avoid concentrations... lastly, tank water will become more acidic over time... if you do not do routine water changes, your dkh and Ph will suffer....changing the water will renew your waters buffers, thus allowing it to remain stable....
