I've had this guy for many years, so long I can't remember when I bought him. I'd estimate between 5-10 years ago. I keep him in a 46-gallon tank with 6 tetras and 2 cory cats. I recently noticed some small, reddish protrusions at the corner of the gills. They look almost like pimples and I was just wondering what this was, if it's something I need to worry about, and how to fix it if so. He does not appear to be in any distress and is acting normally. The first 2 pictures are from last month (got sidetracked) and the last 2 are today. Also, I notice that he seems to have some whitish coloration in mottled patches on his body; most evident in the recent pictures. He's looked like that on an off for even longer. I've always thought it was just a play of the light or a natural change that comes with age for this species (no, I don't know which species), but maybe I was wrong?
