2 of my swordtails had fry within a couple days of each other and now i have maybe around 10 little fry swimming in the floating plants at the top of my aquarium :greenyay: Since this is my first batch i want to try and save as many as possible. Can i keep them in a small tank without a filter? (the tank used to be used for my salamanders).

Thanks

get a net breeder and yu can keep the fry in there. For food get bbs or hikari first bites. Soe people crush up flake but I just use crushed up freeze dried bloodworms.

Just so you know, water from an established tank won't help another tank cycle at all.

The bacteria that are responsible for 'cycling' live on sufaces, not in the water. Of course, if you place lots of floating plants in the new tank, then I'm sure it can handle 10 swordtail fry until it actually cycles.

Just don't overfeed them, and vac the gravel once a day... The plants should absorb all of the ammonia.

thanks redchigh i had no idea about the bacteria. but ya with some live floating plants (mixed with fake) and one or two planted in the aquarium it should be fine for some tiny swordtail fry. Another question though: do livebearer fry eat algae?

yes they do but don't count on them eating a lot or only algae.

ok. Last question; if my fry only eat micro worms 3-4 times a day if that good until they're clearly big enough to eat the crushed flakes?
