Hi all, I just got my first saltwater setup after keeping freshwater fish for years. I bought a JBJ Nano cube 28 used from my LFS and everything on it works great with one exception. It came with a Tunze Nano protein skimmer that doesn't really seem to be working. It has been set up for 3 days and there is no skim. On top of that, if I try to adjust it a little higher it shoots water up into the chamber, threatening to overflow.

I can't really find anything obviously wrong with the skimmer, but I admit that I don't really know what to look for. I have convinced myself to buy another skimmer asap but I am having a hard time finding one that will fit in the little mini sump area without major modifications. The JBJ protein skimmer that is designed for the tank has mixed reviews that lead me to believe I won't be able to keep corals with it installed and will need to upgrade.

Does anyone have any experience or advice on the subject to share?

Sometimes it can take several days to "break" in a skimmer, depending on the bioload\organics in the tank the skimmer may take some time to develop a film to adhere to. Frequent changes in the skimmers water level will cause this to take longer. Have you added a air flow adjuster to the venturi intake? This can help fine tune the skimmer some.

So far, the tank is live rock only. Cleanup crew in a couple of days. I haven't bought that, but I think this skimmer has one built in. There is a blue air flow adjustment valve at the base of the collection cup. After hours of research, I think I found that the problem with it was water in the air line. I ordered a custom collection cup that will allow me to push the skimmer further into the little sump area on the nano cube. Hopefully it's all good after that.
