Greetings,

I want to ask for opinions on stocking for a community 20 gallon high fish tank

I would prefer a colorful and peaceful community tank

The tank is cycled. It currently has 3 tetras (I have no idea what kind of tetras they are. Picture attached. The reason is the tank is passed to me from someone else).

It has a large sponge filter and a AquaClear 40 as well.

It is medium planted with about 6 plants

My plan is

1. Getting a big fish that uses the tank height well and/or uses the surface water
This fish also acts as the predator to maker smaller fish schooling

I am thinking to get a Dwarf Gourami for this purpose

2. A school of small / colorful fish that will get well with the current 3 tetras
Prefer mid-water fish

3. (A while later) A group of 6-10 cherry shrimps for the bottom

Any suggestions / opinions are appreciated ;-)

I say this is a very good stocking level; those pristella tetras are a interesting/hardy choice! I've seen them in an "albino" form; they rather interesting fishes! They tough cookies; almost impossible to kill - IMO!

But yes; that stocking level looks about right. However the gourami won't keep the tetras together as a tight school; they will soon realise that it poses no threat. If you want a tight schooling fish; I suggest you look into rummynose tetras (which I have currently) and some people even recommend Cardinals (which I'm not familiar with.)
