Hi Taylor.

What species of plec is that? Some are carnivorous therefore, they may not like greens but rather, meat.
Hope the pleco gang will come to help you soon.:)
Just try to identify your plec first and they'll help you as much as they can. If not, a pic can help.:D

Yeh, i'll go with Blue. Try to get a pic up for an ID so you can find out about the best possible diet for him. In the mean time try some veges like cucumber or zuccini, washed, sliced down the middle & tied to a rock to secure it. Some plecs diet consists almost solely of veges, some eat wood so make sure you have some driftwood in the tank but most sp. will appreciate fresh veges to some degree. Good luck with him.

Is the pleco in the same tank that has recently been cycled?

How long has the pleco been in the tank? If it's new, it's probably still a bit shy in the tank.

What are the water parameters?

what time of day do you feed him?
a few of mine are really shy, so i feed them when they're most active at night, i also turn the light off.
you can see him with the light from the room to make sure he is eating?

ok this is what i do when i wake up the light has been off all night so i toss in 3 algae tablets and dim the rooms lights to see if hes eating in his caves/place. He ignores them. Then because usually hes at his other cave when the light is on because it ttly enclosed and dark and the other cave isnt i feed him 3 algae tablets there and he ignores them :(

I've never really had this problem with my common pleco. When I first got him he was small and always active now he's about 3-4 inches a little less active but when I throw in an algea wafer/tab he is the first to it...Just kicks the other fish out of the way. The same way when I slice a piece cucumber up and put it in. It takes him a lil while to realize its there but when he does know its there he eats all the way through them! I would definetly slice a pice of cucumber in there and put something threw it so it sinks. Like weights or something, I just use a spoon ( i have nothing else ) and i put the cucumber threw the spoon and then bury the spoon in the gravel so you cant see it....Give it a try!

Hello, I also have 2 common plec. in the same tank with gold fish. They are not as sociable as gold fish though, i noticed. In the beginning, I bought my plecs and Goldies at the same day. They don't grab the food like the goldfish and always very shy to go out. Unlike the goldies when i'm near the tank, they wiggle their tales like dogs!!I love them. But plecs, as they become more comfortable with their environment i noticed if they like the food, they'll fight for it and compete with the goldfish . If your tank have algae, then it must have ate already during the night.
My pleco loves boiled green pea(skinned), boiled potato, or boiled rice or any boiled veg that is very soft enough to nibble it. Put a very small bit (so it won't spoil the water)when he is out in his hiding place, then walk away far from the aquarium where he will not see you. Sure he wil come to it. I noticed plecs are very shy. As if they don't like someones watching them. :) They said you should give the food at night which best time for them, but my plecs eats during the day also and competes with the goldies now...
One thing also, plecs don't have sharp eyesight coz mine always missed the food and gold fish end up eating most of it so i have to put more so the plecs can eat.

My common pleco never has liked algae wafers he does like the cucumber and other veggies but I have never know one that didn't eat the shrimp pellets they love them. You just need to give it time for the smell to reach him. They go straight down so just drop them above where he is. They also like fresh shrimp. They can become quite aggressive over food at about 7 or 8 inches depending on the other fish in the tank.

Yup. All true.
And then when mine passed 10 inches, the struggle was on! I have to dump a TON of food in opposite corners of my 125 so that my plecs will concentrate (2 common males) on acualy EATING instead of fighting over the food.

Oh My :shock2: I have only ever had 1 pleco in a tank at a time yours must be something to see... They are such funny fish to watch anyway. I have heard more people talk about them like they weren’t any more than maid service and I try to tell them you don’t know what your missing talk about personality

Don't worry about it too much. I seldom see my pleco eat -- for the longest time all he did was hang out upside down under a bridge ornament. But i know he must be eating because my tank is clean of algae and the algae wafers always disappear.

That reminds me. Someone here mentioned long ago that algae wafers tend to dissolve fast.

Yes that is true. they can tend to do that. But pretty much all fish, well depending on what you have, will eat the algea wafer. And that can be a little intimidating to the pleco because they are quite shy. All of my fish go after the algea wafers...I have to throw in at least 2 just so everyone gets a few nibbles before my loaches and pleco's get there. Its true though :D

Yes, it's true the other fish will eat away at the wafers. I did forget to mention that I've had this pleco for about 14 months and yes, he's growing!

I have 2 BN in one tank and when I was injecting CO2 my pH was about 6.6 I have since stopped injecting CO2 and the pH is now 7.2

With the CO2, my male BN was a lump on a log. He would swim over to anything and everything I put in the tank and sit there. He wouldn't eat it, he wouldn't rasp the glass, nothing. The female did eat a little more but nothing like she should have. Since I removed the CO2 and the pH is higher, he eats like there is no tomorrow and I mean he east anything I put in the tank from veggies to fruit, shrimp pellets, algae wafers, tetra crisps, crab bites, blood worms, anything I put in there.

So, what is your pH? Might be the cause, then again, might be just cool temperatures or the idea it likes to eat at night. Put a piece of zucchini in there just before lights out and see if it has been rasped on in the morning.
