Yesterday I got a small pleco for a tank - don't freak out on me, he's in a 5 gallon tank (heated, filtered, cycled) *for the time being* which I know is much too small, but in the next 6-8 weeks he'll be upgraded to a much larger tank. He's only about 3 inches long.

He was happily swimming at the store so I picked him since he was active and looked healthy. I acclimated him slowly to the water and the temperature over the course of an hour and added him to the tank. He's in with a betta, I watched them closely for about 45 minutes to be sure there was no aggression - my betta checked him out pretty closely, but never was aggressive. I kept an eye on the tank for the rest of the night and I wasn't worried at all as my betta was rather disinterested in him after the initial adding of him to the tank.

Last night the pleco was on the wall, being rather normal I suppose. I purchased some Omega One veggie rounds and put one in the tank for him. This morning he didn't appear to have eaten anything and he was floating at the top of the tank, not attached to anything. I thought he was dead, but I poked him and he swam away. He's still floating at the top of the tank, but now he's upside down - if I poke him he'll turn over and swim away though. What should I do? The tank has a filter so the water should be oxygenated, but should I add some extra oxygen with a bubbler? Is he just sickly? Anything helps right now :) Thanks so much!

I'm not sure what the problem was, but I decided to return him. He wasn't dead when I left my house, but in the 6 miles to the store he died so I don't think it was simply stress. I got a refund and picked up a snail instead, hoping he'll last a bit longer than 17 hours lol

Fish floating like that is a sign of stress I had 2 corys and they did the same thing something in your water could be different to fish store maybe the ph level it's either that or it could have had a swim bladder problem
