I got these fish when I purchased a new tank. Nothing was ever said about there being fish with the tank til I was already there to pick up what I thought was a tank and stand. I think they are jewel cichlids but not sure. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

They remind me of the green terrors, or false green terrors.

Jack Dempsies are a possible too.
I was thinking jack Dempsey or jewel

I was gonna say jewel because of the spot, but I think a couple others have them. Certainly possible. I wish I could say for sure, but someone else will probably come tell you soon. lol My knowledge on cichlids is a tad low...so I can't tell apart a few species like the ones I named.
Ya I don't have any knowledge on cichlids at all

looks like jewels cichlids as you thought but their colors are washed out like they are stressed
They were in a 40 hex I bought the tank and had to move then unprepared, it was like a hundred mile trip. There are like 30 of them. But all survived and now they are in a 55

Old World and New World cichlids don't mix last I thought.
Idk, just a thought. Cuz it doesnt look full jewel but doesnt look full green terror. What about dempsey jewel mix? Im not the best with large cichlids.

Jewels are from Africa where as most other softer water Cichlids are New World.

How long are the cichlids in question? If they are Jewels they tend to be hyper aggressive and get about 4 inches long.
The closest I can find to those are Jack Dempsey's. Youngsters do have spots like that, as do females and are less colorful. Males will grow out of the spots, usually, and get in more color. It's also likely they weren't that well cared for, but their shape, colors and markings all look Dempsey to me. Especially that dorsal fin and the face shape, as well as the colors, though yours seem to be a bit dull at the moment, or possibly young or female.

Extremely faded red or turquoise jewels are a possible as well, but they seem too big for that.
