Okay, so I didn't feed the neons and phantoms yesterday.... today I get home and one of my phantoms has a plant root sticking out of its mouth!

Am I better off letting it figure out what to do? SHould I try to pull it out? Don't they know better?

Here's a pic:

Your tetra might have bitten off the plant roots sticking out of the gravel. It's quite common even in my tank where even my angelfish love to nibble on leaves and roots sticking out.

I agree, leave it alone, the fish will figure it out on it's own.

update -- the root seemed to have been dealt with the next day. It started acting really weird and I thought maybe it injured itself -- it was making quick motions like rubbing on things, swimming on its side for a day or so. All okay now!

I'm glad to hear it's cleared up. :)
My phantoms often swim round with bloodworm on their mouths for ages, before they actually eat it!! :D
