Ninja snails snuck up on me! From where?!

Ok, I've had my 10 gal tank going for probably about a month, now... I've had the plants in there for about three weeks, give or take a few days. This morning, randomly, I wake up to not one or two... but 8 snails?! Every time I go recount, I find more! Where did these guys come from?

They're all small, but not baby-tiny, and have slight variations in size...

Also, a third of my Ludwigia stems were chewed through... Maaaaaaaan... It was just starting to rooooooot! :cry:

Guess I'll start plopping in more bottom feeder food... :lol:

Where do you think these guys came from, though? And so suddenly? I've never seen even one of these guys and now they're everywhere and wreaking havoc on my poor defenseless plants...

(I tried to take pictures... but the pics aren't turning out)

Chances are they were hitchhikers on your plants, snails are very good at remaining hidden for long periods of time.

Try placing a piece of lettuce on the tank bottom at night, in the morning it should be covered in snails, simply remove the lettuce and any snails with it.

Best to do it soon though as they can multiple very quickly.

Taz is right on all counts. if they're unwanted definitely do the lettuce trick

do you know what kind they are? Perhaps ramshorn snails, pond snails, or malaysian trumpet snail? I don't think mts snack on plants as much so probably one of the first two. (I'm just curious- I'm a snail nut! Also i am nosey.)

Also i wanted to point out: snails mostly go after decaying plant matter. make sure your plants are healthy and not lacking in minerals!

Got the same thing happening in my tank, almost the same time scales as well.

Can they reproduce when they are so small?

I don't mind them... Maybe if they try a massive takeover, I'll try the lettuce trick, but for now, they're mostly out of sight. :)

As for which ones... well you're the snail-nut... so maybe you can tell me? :-D I have no experience in snails, aside from the one I got years and years ago that was eaten by my vicious little goldfish... :oops:

By the way, the leaf behind the little guy is about 3/4inch wide... so the pic is roughly 4x times bigger than the actual snail... lol
