I started a mini tank, 10 gallons, after I found this forum and am now moving up to a 38 gallon Geneva Series by All-Glass.

First question: I know the rule is 1" of fish per gallon but how do you factor in ornaments? I would like to get several larges pieces that do have "swim thrus" plus plastic plants but don't want to crowd out my fish for swimming space.

Second question: Does anyone prophylactically treat for disease upon arrival of new fish? Obviously other than cycle fish. With my first tank I bought platys and on day three I had columnaris and lost a fish.

I'm planning on assorted platys, cardinal tetras and cherry red shrimp for this tank and may add one other species.

Thanks for your help!

no need to medicate new fish unless they have signs of disease. As for plants, as much as you want, it wont crowd the swimming space much as the fish will like swimming through them like a forest, just make sure they can swim through it without getting tangled or lost.
