I kept all kinds of fresh and marine aquariums up until about 5 years ago and couple moves. Finally got motivated recently set up a 55 gal freshwater. Wanted lots of plants but not lots of light so everything is plastic in it. Fish don't seem to care except for the Florida Flagfish that would really like to eat the plants. Filter is one of those new Rena Smartfilter 55 hang ons. Seems to be a really well designed filter. There's also a large volcano air pad buried under the gravel on the right. It puts out about a 5" ring of bubbles up through the tall root piece.

Occupants:
6 brilliant rasbora
6 tiger barbs (2 reg, 2 green, 2 albino)
2 Florida Flagfish
4 platies (2 female orange, 1 male blue, 1 female blue)
1 Neon Gold Barb

thanks all. I like how the tank came out, one of the best freshwater tanks I've done.

The "rock" in the middle is actually hollow and plastic so it really doesn't displace much water. The tiger barbs love it with several cave entrances on both sides of it they are constanly swimming in and out of it. The brilliant rasbora shoal costantly around the tank in front and behind all the plants. I think I'll add 4 more and make a school of 10 of them. Love the Flagfish, I haven't seen them before and had to have them. They act like cichlids but aren't any more aggresive then the barbs are. They spend most of their time hanging around the plants and rock looking for food to eat.

Ok, heres the truth

i dont really like it, theres nothing wrong with it as in bad for the fish its just a matter of personal taste. Theres something about how the ornaments and the gravel and how they dont match, and how the light reflects off it pretty bad. But its all personal taste.

Been a couple months. Take is about 5 months old now and doing good.

Same fish in it with the addition of 3 Otos about a month ago to help control the algae with the Flagfish. I do about 15-20% water change weekly.

Any suggestions for new residents?

I'm not a big fan of decorations either...but you did a nice job...all I think it needs is a background to pull it together...

I'm thinking of putting some cory cats in but I don't know if the Flagfish will tolerate them. They don't like the otos if they are around the bottom of the tank.

New fish in the tank. 3 baby Micky Mouse Platies. They are about a 1/2 inch and big enough to not be eaten by any of the other fish. I guess I had enough cover in there for them to grow. I didn't notice them until just recently. So if the male is orange and the female blue I wonder what color they will turn out to be.

Still running

Been over a year since I've posted on here. Tank is still going good. It survived a move. Have lost some fish and added some since then. Platies just recently got a disease or something 3 of the 4 died within 2 days, no other fish affected. One of the clown loaches had Ich when it was newly introduced to the tank. Aquarium salt and 86 degree water took care of it. Clowns will eventually move to a 120 gallon when they get bigger.

Had a bad carpet algae outbreak a few weeks ago and ended up taking all plastic plants and rocks out, letting them sit in the sun for a couple days, rinsing them off and putting them back in after a few big 50% water changes and gravel vacuuming. So far so good. Current inhabitants:

1 Platy
2 Clown loaches
5 brilliant rasboras (been in tank since beginning)
1 Australian Rainbow (been in tank since beginning)
2 African dwarf frogs
2 Chinese algae eaters
1 small Labi cichlid
1 Opaline Gourami
1 Neon gold barb (been in tank since beginning)

The cichlid was a rescue it was going to die in the tank it was in so I took it knowing they are usually more peaceful then other cichlids. So far no aggression issues but my tank also has a ton of hiding spaces, caves, and plants.
