Hi! So I start college in the fall, and my school allows for underwater pets in tanks up to five gallons, so I got a five gal fish tank for my dorm room. I've kept a 25 gal saltwater tank in a class for a few months and loved it but that's about the extent of my experience with fish (have had reptiles, dogs, cats, etc so I'm used to pets/responsible all that jazz). I'm looking for an alternative to just a betta for my tank, though I know that's a good option. So basically I'm looking for stocking suggestions for a live planted well maintained 5 gallon.

Secondarily I want to start it so I can have a long time to allow it to fully cycle and get used to keeping the fish in terms of water changes and feeding etc this summer, but my school is about 3 hours away by car, so should I deal with travelling with the fish or just wait and get them when I go to school. I'll need to travel with them at some point anyways potentially for long breaks and summer, so should I wait to get the tank set up and get fish or do it now, the car ride might affect stocking options for me too I don't really know.

Thanks in advance for any advice!!

Traveling with a small tank is very easy, and 3 hours is not long at all. I would start the tank now to get it cycled before you go away to college. You don't have a ton of options for a 5 but there are non betta options.

thanks for your input, the person working at my lfs said I should just wait but I thought it'd be better to give it a longer time to cycle over the summer, what would travelling with it entail?

Draining the tank, bagging the fish, bagging the filter media. Then at the new place fill it back up again, put the media back in the filter and then acclimate the fish to the new water.

5 gallon stocking

I have a 5 gallon fluval spec. I am stocking with "nano" fish ---
stone catfish, dwarf cories, sparkling gouramis, shrimp. There are all kinds of options for nano tanks today -- you may want to google and check them out
