Welcome to the forum!

Rena is supposedly very quiet, but I still find any air pump noisy. Having said that, Rena works well and I have two of them. I have also used Whisper pumps for years and they use to be easy to maintain and not too noisy either. Get a larger one than you need for future upgrades or more air-driven stuff, and purchase a gang valve with at least two outlets. The gang valves let you can bleed off excess air to set your flow into the tank at the level you'd like. You don't want back pressure on the pump since that decreases the life of the pumps diaphragm.

thanks for the advise, what size then would you recommend for a 37 gal tank?
Rena 300 or 400, Whisper 40, 60, or 100
Generally, the recommended max tank size is listed on the pump box.

I have the Whisper 60 on my 20g tank. It isn't too much even though it's rated for up to a 60g tank. Nice thing about the 60 is it has two outputs. The next size down, the Whisper 40 only has one.

I would recommend the Whisper air pump too. I have a 60 which runs several tanks easily. Just bought a second one to replace the junk Top Fin air pumps I bought (neither lasted a month apart from one outlet on each).

I use Azoo 9500 air pumps. They run about $20 on drsfostersmith. I have had my current ones for at least a few years now with no problems. They provide a lot of air and are extremely quiet, one is about a foot and a half from my bed. The bubbles in the water make more noise than this air pump.
