It’s been 15 years since I last had to cycle a tank, fast forward to today and I signed myself starting to look at fishless cycling for a brand-new 200 L tank.

I moved from London to the smallest town in Austria, where finding or buying pure ammonia is proving rather difficult… Can anyone recommend alternative sources of pure ammonia to kickstart cycling? I know of 3 possibilities:

fish food
Defrosted prawns
Urine.

however all three are rather unscientific…(and I’d like to avoid peeing in my tank!) any suggestions on how to tackle this first part of the cycling phase?

Thank you in advance!

How about a fertilizer with a high concentration of ammonia?

Not sure what's available over there, but some forms of liquid fertilizer (for the convenience of small sizes and ease of application) have quite a bit of ammonium nitrate, both components of which will provide portions of your nitrate chain, much as it does in soil.
