Ya lol. With the fish, i would change it slightly;
5 bala sharks (actually a schooling fish)
6-10 clown loaches (loves big schools)
3-6 pictus cats (actually a schooling fish as well)
10-20 rosy barbs (nice big tank, nice big school)
7-12 congos (again, nice big tank, nice big school)
3-5 silver dollars (schooling fish as well)

The unknown cichlid looks like keyholes. Im i right? Also in the first picture, behind the heater looks like a dwarf gourami...

All the extra fish seem great but they would out grow the tank quick wouldnt they, yeah there was a dwarf in it but its gone now, yeah there keyhole cichlids, think i might have to take my wee oscars back there doing a good bit of nipping etc to the congos and barbs.

thanks tankman of the ifo of schooling fishies ;)

Both stocking lists are inadequate for this tank, unfortunately. This tank is only 53 gallons (Jewel Rio 240 is just the name, tankman, not the size) which makes the following fish too large/active/high bioload - Clown loaches, oscars, pictus and silver dollars. The angels will do well in this tank as will the barbs and congo tetras. If you want the angels, the keyhole cichlids can't stay, unfortunately. You also can only have one rainbow (albino) shark to a 4ft tank, as they are territorial. There isn't enough room for a proper school of pictus catfish, so I also suggest rehoming him. Increase your barbs to a school of around 10, the congos to a school of around 10 and get rid of the fish I mentioned and this tank will be wonderful. You could even add a school for around 10 cory catfish.

Mixing cichlids is very hit and miss. Not only do you need to be concerned with aggression, but many cichlids have very different water requirements. You have to really observe their behavior to see if there's any bullying or if one of the fishes are struggling. If there is, you might have to rehome one of the cichlids. It's not impossible however, and seeing how your tank is set up, there appears to be plenty of hiding places and the size of the tank is fine.

Btw beautiful job on the aquascaping and hope everything turns out alright.

Lovely tank!

Yeah.. Cichlids are certainly both hit and miss when mixing but some are just unable to be mixed . Now.. That said it's *possible * to mix keyholes and angels in a 240g but not so much in this tank size . I mix cichlids like what tankman mentioned .. But in my 225g tank.
And rams with angels is a safer bet with cichlid mixing . That combo works both in my 55g and my 225g that also has discus.
I hope you get the big tank sooner rather then later . I moved my school of balas over from my 75g to my 225g recently and they're SOOOO HAPPY. Very active strong swimmers . They'll eventually crash into your tanks walls when startled (and hard!) .

i have been observing the cichlids in this tank and they have all settled in well the wee oscars were a little bit nipping but its all stopped and the swim and hide with there tank mates,am hoping toget a large tank maybe 6-8 foot, the oscars came up to my hands the other night when i was installing the inlet tubes and spray bars and i stroked them and they seemed to enjoy that were as the other fish just disappear if your hands are in the tank,i would love to get a few nice rare type of fish that have great color but its finding them especially over here in Northern Ireland.

Thanks Graham

aww.. thats sweet. Thats one thing I do like about cichlids..they interact with their owner..come to the glass when you're in sight and very often come to your hand when you're working in the tank. Some are known for recognizing the difference between their owners and strangers. My discus don't like strange faces but my angels are like puppies begging for food from anyone lol. My African cichlids get spooked often if a strange grown up gets near their tank.. but crowd the front of the glass splashing me as I pass by lol. And the tank boss in there "lovingly" bites the heck out of my finger if I dare get near his cave ;-).

I ended up putting terracotta pots in for the cichlids yesterday but they wont use them they prefer to hide in the wood, got another new cichlid today along with two torpedo barbs and a small bala so hopefully he will grow up along with the large one as i lost the other big one yesterday.
