Actually, I don't deal with it. lol. I just vac what little I can get up front, and use my hand to try and get some of the dead leaves, etc. Other than that, I don't do anything, and I don't gravel vac. Just hover the vac above the substrate, getting up any unsightly stuff, and then I'm done.
Oh, just remember, the better the water quality, the better the coloring. Also, if you keep the temp around 81, it will bring out even more color. And good quality food, as well as vegies like peas, french-cut green beans, zucchini, etc. And frozen bloodworms a couple times a week.
ok, well my fish are sick now so there color will seem faded a bit now, the temp is at 80 degrees and i feed frozen black worms once every 2 weeks. I might give them more vegies though since the veges i feed them now are just algae wafers. Also are brine shrimp pellets ok for stable diet?
I feed my Bolivians flake food, frozen brine shrimp, frozen bloodworms, vegies, shrimp pellets, occasional algae wafer, vegi wafers, vegi flake, and a few other things. It's good to feed a variety.
If they are kind of sick, then I'd try feeding peas. Take frozen peas, and place them in a cup of boiled water, let sit for 20 seconds, and then peel the skin off the pea and squish the peas into the tank. feed a couple peas first, then some flake food. Also, get yourself some Vegi Flakes.
Also, don't use just 1 food as the main staple food. Feed a variety. Shrimp pellets are ok, but are not recommended as the main diet. Good quality flake food should be the main diet, and add all the others on different days to give a variety.
i am treating for internal paracite so im using metronidazole. Once they are ok (which i hope will happen soon) i will feed brine shrimp pellets, flake food, algae wafers, cucumbers, frozen black worms, and frozen brine shrimp. Is that a big enough variety?
Not so much the frozen food. The flake food should be the main course, and all the others is added to give variety. Here's what I usually do...
I feed flake food in the morning, either a good cichlid flake food or Vegi Flakes. Then in the evening, I give a treat, as in either a vegi like peas or zucchini, or frozen bloodworms, or frozen brine shrimp, beef heart, or anything else, as a treat. This will give variety. I generally do more vegi's than meats. Even french cut beans is great, as long as it's the frozen and not the stuff in the cans with salt added.
