Saw this little bristlenose in pet smart the other day. He looked a tad different than his tank mates. He has more defined spots and some lighter coloration along the edges of his fins, kind of reminiscent of the starlight (maybe he's a hybrid?) Anyway just wanted to show him off since I have found I love sharing pics of fish I see at the store. Haha

I also have a question. Can adding magnolia leaves raise my pH? Its up to around 7.4 when its normally right at 7. Only thing I have changed is adding 3-4 dried out magnolia leaves. My fish are still healthy, but a blackwater tank with high pH isnt really.blackwater at all...its just stained water. Thanks everyone!

He is very pretty. Be certain he is in fact a bristlenose and not a pleco that will grow to be a monster. Sometimes there are definitely infiltrates.
I am sorry I can not answer your question about magnolia leaves, as I have never heard of using them. Oak yes. Are you using liquid/titration test kits, and have you tested your tapwater or water source straight out? Maybe I can get someone along to help answer your question.

I think it would be unusual if Magnolia leaves raised your pH. Most of the leaves used in blackwater are large thick leaves like IAL, Banana, Oak, Manzanita, etc. Magnolia fits this description. Most of the pH lowering attributed to this comes from the CO2 slowly emitted as they decompose.

Raising pH is easy. Raise your KH with crushed coral, seashells, cuttlebone, even eggshell. Your pH will rise along with your hardness.

Have you considered RO water, or a mix or RO and tap? That is how I keep my PH lower for my licorice gouramis. I use oak and almond leaves, and some driftwood as well.

Ahh...perhaps I have misread. The idea was to lower your pH? Well, then, Carole has the best advice.
