Hey guys,

So I had to throw out the biowheels in my Penguin 350 filter (had to nuke the tank) and replace the carbon pads. So now there are only two carbon pads in the filter and the thing IS SO DAMN QUIET YOU HAVE NO IDEA IT'S LIKE BLISS. Anyway...I was thinking of not putting any wheels back in. Ideas?

I could make my own "cartridge" with extra filter pads I have with no carbon? That way I can just leave them in the filter? Does that work? IDEAS PEOPLE lol.

Skip the carbon and fill it full of floss and sponges. It works well. I did that with an aquaclear HOB. Nothing to replace, just rinse out the media and way you go. The bio wheels serve a purpose but it is redundant. I really don't know why a manufacturer would introduce more moving parts in a device that runs 24 hours a day every day, it doesn't make sense other than for built a in failure mode.

Here's something to think about. Water that enters the filter has a full concentration of ammonia in it, whatever that may be. As it passes through the first stage of filtration, again, whatever that may be, the bacteria living on it consumes some of the ammonia, lowering the concentration. Then the water moves to the next stage of filtration, where the same thing happens. As water moves through the filter, it is being constantly stripped of ammonia until ultimately, it is returned to the tank, free of ammonia. If the water entering the tank has 0 ammonia in it, then that means that the water that is almost leaving the filter has a minimal at best amount of ammonia on it to feed bacteria. The water that spins the penguins biowheel has already been through the filter, so how effective could the wheel really be?? Ideally, you're last bit of media holds the least amount of bacteria. If every bit of media in your filter is required to neutralize ammonia, then that means that you need more media....

The emperor filters, on the other hand, have a second pump that drives the biowheel. The water that comes out of the spraybar comes straight from the intake and does not pass through any media. This means that the water has a full concentration of ammonia in it, which means that the wheel can support a much larger colony of bacteria.

Food for thought.


When I used those filters, I just put Aquaclear sponges in them.
