There not really the same thing. You can use porus rock and put a good water flow over it and you will build up good bacteria but not to the same extent that saltwater live rock has. It also takes quite a long time to turn "dead" rock into live. Lava rock is used as a bio filter but its one of the worst per sq inch you can use. now there are man made things with much better bio holding capacity.
