Keeping fish out of the overflows

I lost a yoyo loach who overnight decided to squeeze into my overflows and got sucked into the filter.
Dead!

Screens would block waste from being filters and probably clog up.

Any ideas?

Hmmm.. you really have no choice but to use screens lol if you want to keep using the overflows. Just declog the overflows by using a long algae scraper and scrape off the gunk clogging the screens from time to time. Or you still don't like the fact that it clogs and you would have to scrape the crud off, shut down the overflows, and get a nice canister filter. :)

What type of screen?
I use the ones that keep insects out of homes, filter things, etc. They are made of plastic and look like a steel mesh. You can probably find some at your local home improvement stores. Look for ones with really small holes if you plan on getting some; they come as a roll for sell.
