I purchased a Jack Dempsey 3 days ago. Bullied a bit by tankmates and relocated to a 20g just with him in it. He has red gills and hides behind the filter and wont come out. Anyone know whats wrong?

Usually a sign of red gills means ammonia poisoning. Change a third of the water daily til ammonia reaches 0 if the tank isn't cycled. The fish is also stressed so hes more susceptible to getting sick. Test for ammonia nitrites and nitrates daily and see if the levels are lowering or spiking.

Yea.. ammonia poisoning is what it sounds like. However I am more for 50-80% water changes if your tests show ammonia or nitrites in there..or even high nitrates.
