When I started keeping fish, I decided to keep something easy. A Betta fish would be perfect as a first fish. I got two, one was named Bluefin and the other was Microred. Some of you might gasp when I tell you what environment my fish lived in. Each fish had a 1 gallon bowl with no filter or heater. Now as a MUCH more experienced fish keeper, I look down on those 9 months. I was not very good at taking care of them at all, and Bluefin lived to 6 months while Microred lived to 9 months.
It was a whole 6 months before I got my next fish, and this time it was two goldfish. One was Edwin and another was named Goldeen (both fantails). The dude at the pet store had greatly misinformed me about tank size and proper care and I got a 5 gallon for my 2 goldfish. I totally realize that I probably should've gotten a 30 gallon or something like that, but I probably wouldn't have any space to put it. Goldeen died a half month later because of high ammonia (due to my inadequate filter). Edwin started dying a day later and I realized that I had to change the water. I changed the water and Edwin was fine for about 5 days until he started dying from oxygen deprivation. We quickly rushed to the store and got an airstone, then we got a 10 gallon tank while we were there.
When Edwin was safe in his 10 gallon, we invested into another goldfish. His name was Thomas (fantail) and we put him in the same 10 gallon tank. They were fine until Edwin came down with ich about a week later. We immediately separated them and put Edwin in a 1.5 gallon hospital tank. Edwin lived in the hospital tank for about 3 days until he died. About 2 days later I got another goldfish named Sylvester (black moor). Thomas had just contracted ich and I had to treat the tank and do 30 percent water changes every day and that's what I'm still doing...
