Heres one for you. I'm not going to waste my time or yours by spinning a tall tale. About 4 years ago, my fiancee went to PetSmart in Sioux Falls, SD to get a guppy fish to keep the one we had company. He came back with another one, and along with that a freshwater snail that the smiling employee asked him if he would like to have and if he did he could have it for free. I believe this to be the moment that all our worst nightmares began. Currently, he is dying, I will spare you the details of night after night the suffering my fiancee experiences, the inaccurate diagnosis and $260,000 of hospital bills later, my personal journey into microscopy, my accurate diagnosis, our desperate attempt to convince the medical world of what I discovered despite pictures and proof, and eventually catching the attention of one doctor at Avera who sent him to a parasitic specialist and from there was officially diagnosed with schistosomiasis. We just got a call from the CDC a couple of months ago the medication he had to take, praziquantel and steroids cost $1200 out of my pocket because he has no medical insurance and have done little good. He is not receiving treatment or pain medication and every day he is in so much pain and so swollen in his abdominal area that even I can't stand it. All this came in the form of a free freshwater snail given to him by PetSmart by a smiling employee. To top it off these pet stores are so protected when it comes to cases like this that there is virtually nothing we can do about it. My suggestion to you is that before you get any pet from anywhere educate yourself on every disease that pet can acquire, especially the ones that can be transferred to humans and how that can be prevented. May God help you if you are to ever walk in our shoes.
