I recently decided to try experimenting with some hornwort that I got. It didn't seem to work well. Most of the whorls fell of and died. I'm assuming that this was due to low CO2 levels, but I cannot be certain. All levels in the aquarium were normal. I threw it in a smaller 3 gallon aquarium just to test it a little. Again, I'm assuming that there was too much plant and too little CO2. It's whorls began to fall off and begin to decay causing my ammonia levels to rise which completely defeated the purpose of purchasing the plant in the first place. It was also supposed to harbor a new fry I was expecting.

I'm not so sure the co2 or lack thereof would cause this. I have my puffer tank full of the stuff without any co2 addition and don't have any problems with it. More likely to be a lack of fertilization or proper lighting.
Yea, your probably right. I keep it in a separate room that doesn't get much light. The ammonia levels were at, if I remember correctly, 0.09 ppm and the pH was fairly basic like 7.6-8. Water temperature was about 78-80 degrees F. But there was probably 20-30 inches of plant in just a 3 gallon tank.

Hornwort has always died in my main community tank w/2-3 wpg of light, daily CO2 and ferts. It has thrived in my betta tank with only a heater, no filtration, and light from a window. Apparently hornwort also likes to float on the top of the water, not buried.

Soft water seems to be the key. I can keep it under the same lighting as my planted tank but in a tank all it's own and it will grow without ferts or anything. In the tanks I fertilize it dies in a matter of days.
